"Boom" Trains: Rolling Bombs Are Passing Through Bergen County Daily

by Gerald Anthony

Love saving money at the gas pump? We all do. The USA has once again become an energy superpower. Domestic oil and natural gas production have "skyrocketed" in the past few years in large part due to the approximately one million barrels of oil being produced daily in the Bakken Shale region of North Dakota.

The increase in the supply of domestically produced oil has led to a significant decease in the price of gasoline and home heating oil.

Good news? Well, not necessarily so if you are a resident of Teaneck, Bergenfield and other Bergen County towns through which this oil is being shipped via train. It is estimated that between fifteen and thirty million barrels of highly volatile oil is rolling through our fair county monthly!

I was recently stopped on an overpass in Teaneck and the tanker cars stretched as far as I could see in both directions. Many of these trains contain more that one hundred tanker cars. The oil trains pass through some of the most densely populated areas of the country According to "The Record," ten derailments of oil carrying trains have occurred within the past year. The worst of these accidents took the lives of forty seven Canadians!

The potential for disaster in our highly populated areas frightening!

What is an ordinary citizen to do?

Admittedly, it is easy to feel powerless when you are trying to influence big oil, interstate commerce or the railroads. I suggest that any individual is capable of the following: Stay aware of what is passing through your town.

Contact you local, county, state and federal governments and inquire what emergency plans are in place should an accident involving an "oil train" take place.

Let your congressmen and senators know of your concerns regarding these shipment of oil though your town. There are technologies available to make the oil less explosive.

Encourage the use of renewable sources of energy!

Lowering demand for oil through conservation is a "train" we all can get on board!

Don't wait for the boom.
